Smarter Grid Solutions (SGS) is a leading provider of Smart Grid products and services with an international client list of utilities including Scottish and Southern Energy, UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution, Con Edison, Southern California Edison and Avangrid. SGS delivers Active Network Management (ANM) solutions that are supported by power systems analysis, systems integration and support services that allow electricity network operators to connect more Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to the existing grid, while avoiding or postponing grid reinforcements.

This is a senior software architecture and design role within the SGS technology development team. The candidate will be responsible for elements of the design and maintenance of the overall technical platform, quality regime, toolset and processes, software engineering function, security architecture, algorithmic control philosophy and future roadmap of the SGS product suite in order to effectively support the ongoing development, delivery, sales and consultancy functions within the company.

The candidate will be comfortable with high-level business analysis, problem decomposition and solution architecture, working with both internal and external stakeholders to an extremely high standard and within budget and timescale.
The candidate will pioneer the design, build and documentation of cutting edge, highly scalable, software frameworks and control architectures suitable for real-time, real-world, global deployment within the smart grid business sector.

The candidate will be a senior software design engineer with a strong leadership and mentoring track record, best-in-class industry knowledge and experience, proven history of real-world success and technical evangelism.

Responsibilities and Objectives

• Responsible for the analysis, design and high-level engineering of the key hardware, networking and software technology components and applications required by the SGS platform
• Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of current and emerging technologies and methodologies within the general enterprise software marketplace, specifically with regard to the utility sector
• Responsible for liaising with customers, partners and suppliers to promote and enhance the SGS platform and brand throughout the industry
• Responsible for providing best-in-class technical advice and support to the other business functions within SGS, and potentially as an external consultant.
• Responsible for defining and maintaining a world-class development and delivery culture and set of methodologies to ensure the SGS product brand is consistently excellent and to the highest quality standards

Required Experience and Capabilities
The following skills are deemed desirable for this role:
• Strong academic track record in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or similar, relevant course
• Practical control systems experience utilising state-driven engineering methods
• Proven ability to design, model, implement, and test high performance software for mission critical applications
• Strong demonstrable knowledge and practical experience with Java, REST, JMS, Enterprise Integration Patterns, OSGI, XML, SOA architectures
• Extensive experience in object-oriented software design methodologies and tools (UML)
• Experience working within an ISO certified QA environment
• Experience working within a team-based software lifecycle methodology (Agile/Waterfall) delivering tasks to budget and timescale
• Expert skills in Java, C#, C/C++, JavaScript, HTML5, Python, SQL
• Experience working in TDD, BDD environments
• Good knowledge of DevOps tools (Git, Atlassian, Maven, Docker, etc.)
• Linux, Windows and embedded systems
• Networking experience

The following skills are additionally deemed highly advantageous to candidates.
• Advanced enterprise technologies, e.g. OSGi, J2EE, ESB and IoT
• Cyber security related experience, including system hardening, cryptography, encryption, authentication and authorisation
• Power Systems knowledge and experience
• Knowledge and practical experience of power grid management operational technologies
• Awareness and understanding of recent developments in the power sector, e.g. OpenFMB and the Common Information Model
